Our history

The Basingstoke Consortium was set up in 1986 to form local partnerships between education and the business community. This was during the era of TVEI (Technical and Vocational Educational Initiative), a programme introduced nation-wide in response to concerns expressed by the business world that students were not adequately prepared for working life.

Since then, our mission has been to work with all local secondary schools and colleges to ensure that Basingstoke students have the opportunity to experience the world of work, whether through activities set in business contexts, visits to employers’ premises, employability workshops, careers or skills fairs, mentoring schemes or work placements, and that, as a result, they will be more “work ready”.

Some key moments in our history...

In 2000, we set up the Basingstoke and Deane Education Foundation to work for and on behalf of local schools wishing to apply for specialist school status. By working innovatively and collaboratively, the Foundation helped schools to raise over £300,000 from the business community. Activities included a radio auction and a sports tournament.

In 2003, we took over the organisation and delivery of a new work experience programme for Basingstoke’s 14-19 year olds. The system was planned around the aspirations and abilities of individual students and accessible to the young people, teachers and parents. Employers welcomed the structured programme.

In 2010, we received the Award for Education Business Excellence, when our organisation met the new Quality Standard for the sector. The Award was given in recognition of the high standards of our work, our strong links with local employers, valued contribution to students’ education and excellent relationships with schools.

"Enjoys an excellent reputation locally"
"They always make things happen"
"It has a very flexible and creative approach to delivery"
"They clearly place employers at the centre of what they are hoping to achieve for young people"

In 2011, we were awarded charitable status.
