Working in partnership > Mentoring
Business mentors provide secondary school students with valuable external perspectives on their studies. Mentors support students for a range of reasons including subject revision, aspiration raising, getting back on track, developing communication and planning skills.
The Consortium recruits volunteers from business and the local community who will mentor students on a one-to-one basis, typically for half an hour once a fortnight or month. All mentors receive training from a practising learning mentor and a free enhanced CRB check and are supported throughout the programme by the Consortium and the school's mentoring co-ordinator.
What makes a good mentor?
An ideal mentor needs to be enthusiastic, patient and able to relate to young people. They should be reliable and approachable as well as realistic about what can be achieved in each session. A mentor does NOT have to be a manager, trained counsellor or an expert in education. Equally, they do not have to be a parent of teenage children!
If you want the chance to help local youngsters gain an insight into the world of work and its priorities, whilst learning more about education and developing your own communication skills, mentoring might be ideal for you.
Many employers across Basingstoke see the benefit of letting their staff mentor in schools. As well as the obvious benefits for staff development, the business is seen to make a valuable contribution to the community.
