Working in partnership > Work Experience

Each year the Consortium places more than 1,600 young people on work experience. Last year, with the support of over 700 businesses, students gained experience in fields as diverse as engineering, sport and leisure, land based, IT and public services.

The most popular placements were in education, the Armed Forces, retail, business and finance, and engineering.

Students from the majority of Basingstoke schools have the opportunity to complete at least one week’s work experience during Key Stage 4. This may be in support of a specific vocational course or in a field of interest to the student.

The Consortium also supports colleges to complete health and safety checks for many of their students’ work experience.

We also support students on ‘extended’ work experience: one to two days a week for a term or more. These placements often lead to accreditation or are linked to a specific programme of study.

Basingstoke Consortium provides...

  • Organisation of work experience in close liaison with schools and employers
  • Placement description(s) negotiated individually with each employer
  • Liaison with school to match student to placement, using individual guidance and carefully developed systems
  • Employer Help Line for any queries
  • Professional vetting of placements so that both employer and student are safeguarded by having a safe and suitable placement.  We will give advice and support in these areas as needed
  • Feedback from our annual reviews so that employers are fully informed
  • Recognition of the considerable value of work experience through an annual employer mailing of Certificate of Thanks and Awards Scheme.
What we ask employers to do...
  • Undertake a young person’s risk assessment
  • Interview the student to ensure suitability for placement
  • Plan a programme that will give students a range of experiences
  • Arrange staff supervision to give support, instruction and advice
  • Complete an evaluation report that contributes to the student’s school record of achievements.
