Review 2014

"Starting in Business" was the theme of this year's enterprise conference, which was attended by 100 students from Basingstoke College of Technology and Queen Mary's College and compèred by Alan Donegan from the Pop-Up Business School. Keynote speaker was Dr Liz Jackson MBE, who was once again inspirational and outlined her personal journey from local student to "Secret Millionaire". Workshops were run by local employers on topics including business start-up, enterprise, marketing, social media, legal issues and finance, and an 'Ask the Experts' session provided the opportunity for entrepreneurs to answer students' questions. Businesses supporting the event were HCR, Hireserve, LG Motion, Phillips, Vitacress and What's on 4. Simon Hood, winner of the Young Business Person of the Year at the Inspire13 awards, brought the conference to a close.

Basingstoke Consortium officially launched its 'Inspiring Youth' campaign at an Enterprise Conference for post-16 students in December 2013. Supported by RBS Inspiring Enterprise, the project was designed to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and offer them access to the skills, time and talent of some of the brightest entrepreneurial minds the area has to offer.

The conference was opened by inspirational speaker, Dr Liz Jackson MBE, who shared her journey from start-up with the Prince’s Trust to successful business owner, and was compèred by local entrepreneur Alan Donegan, who runs the successful Pop-up Business School that operates across the country. Interactive workshops included: ‘starting a business – and doing good’, ‘ten ways to be a marketing genius like Lady Gaga’, ‘from apprentice to MD…it’s all about you’, ‘meet an apprentice’ and ‘start a business but don’t get sued’.

There was also an "Ask the Experts" panel and a 'market place' – all focused around the theme of 'enterprise'. The event ended with an entertaining talk by Simon Hood, Head of Marketing, HCR Group, and Young Business Person of the Year, Inspire Awards 2013 and Jemma Cooper of HI Therapies.

Key support for the conference came from a wide range of organisations including Visa Europe, HCR, Penningtons Manches LLP, Great Guns Marketing, LG Motion, Live UnLtd, Vitacress Salads, University of Winchester and What's on 4.
