Insight into Health and Social Care 2008
A careers fair, especially designed for those interested in working in the health and care sector, was held at Basingstoke College of Technology on 17 January. The event was organised by Basingstoke Consortium on behalf of students in local schools and colleges.

Over 120 school students from six schools attended the event, and took part in practical, interactive activities. BCOT and QMC students also participated and organised some of the activities on offer, alongside the other exhibitors. These included: North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke Social Services, occupational therapists, midwifery, cardiac care, Connexions and representatives from universities.
Everyone worked hard to make the event a success and feedback from students and teachers has been excellent.
Toni-Lynn Parker from The Vyne Community School said:
“I enjoyed the trip to Bcot and found it very interesting and useful. It was full of new and helpful facts that will help me when I come to doing my coursework. I found that it will also help me choose what type of job I would like to get into as there was a lot of information about child care and NHS carers and things like that ….. I thought that the whole thing was enjoyable and useful. I especially liked all the stalls that got you involved and made you try out some of the things they need to do in their jobs to find out information about their client/ patient (.e.g. the smoking stall and the drugs stall).
Thank you very much.”
Paula Martin, also from The Vyne, commented:
“…. I also liked the one with the occupational therapist because it was really interesting to see and experiment how people do things if they are disabled. My favourite stall was about child care because I maybe thinking about doing this in the future.”
Thanks to all who attended, and particularly to BCOT and QMC students and staff for all their hard work.

"Meet the Professionals” Working Lunch hosted by B&DBC
A group of Year 9 students from CostelloTechnology College, Bishop Challoner RC School, Aldworth Science College and Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College attended a lunch hosted by B&DBC on Friday 1 February 2008.
The day started in the Council Chamber with a brief introduction by the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane. The working lunch followed the lines of speed networking where small groups of students spent ten minutes with council employees from ten different departments including Community Protection, Strategy & Innovation, Planning & Transportation.

They were able to quiz staff members on a variety aspects of their work i.e. what kind of skills and qualifications were needed, training opportunities, what they liked/disliked about their job.
Students were very surprised by the diversity of jobs available in the Borough Council.
Many thanks to the Council for hosting the event and providing a very tasty buffet lunch.
